Kauralnies (Laura Knies), born in Greenville, South Carolina, attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, where she received her Bachelor's in Fine Art in 2018. There, she studied sculpture, specializing in textiles and fibers. The sewing machine became the tool that has been used to produce most of Kauralnies's work, which is filled with rich pigment and a multitude of colors and patterns. Many of the materials are retrieved from thrift stores, second hand shops, and flea markets. Collecting used materials and remnants are a key component in making the work. Kauralnies finds it necessary to have an "inventory" of materials, so that there is a variety of color and pattern in each work.
